Extended Barrel or Armor Piercing mod? Here's the answer.

Under some conditions the extended barrel will do more damage even against armored opponents! I did some calculations so the decision will be easy. This is based on level V mods in singleplayer; General trend is that high damage weapons like the barrel better.

Assault Rifle-
Barrel = Falcon, Saber, Chakram
Armor = Avenger, Mattock, Revenant, Geth, Collector, Vindicator, Phaeston, Valkyrie, Argus.

Pistol-
Barrel = Paladin, Carnifex, Scorpion
Armor = Predator, Phalanx , Talon, Arc, Eagle

Shotgun-
Barrel = Claymore, Geth Plasma, Crusader
Armor = Katana, Eviscerator, Scimitar, Disciple, Graal, Wraith, Raider.

Sniper Rifle-
Barrel = Mantis, Viper, Widow, Black Widow, Javalin, Valiant
Armor= Incisor, Indra, Raptor

So if you only care about damage against the strongest opponents, this should make deciding easier.

Thanks for taking the time with this. :)

My personal fave is just the Raptor with both Armour Piercing AND extended barrel, really. The usefulness of the ability to shoot through cover with a semiauto rifle cannot be overstated.

Do they stack, and does AP mod stack with weapons that are already AP?

No weapon has an innate AP damage bonus -- but some do have innate cover piercing. It's a completely different stat.

What is defined as armoured opponents? Enemies with Armour "health" such as Brutes and Banshees? Do all of Cerberus troops count as having armour or only the Guardians and their shields?

I'm pretty sure armor means the health bar labeled armor. As to Guardians I think their shields count as cover.

Just plain "armor" like brutes. Shields and barriers are damaged the same as health, and guardian shields are physical obstacles.

Armor has a flat damage reduction on a per bullet basis. That's why high damage weapons don't benefit from armor penetration mods very much.

But do better against armor in the first place, just to clarify.
