safe to charge 3DS with a USB cable on PC/PS3?

i just got 1 and it seems to be working well but I just want to know if it has any downside to it?

It's perfectly fine. All USB ports output the same amount of voltage and your USB adaptor converts the voltage the the correct amount needed for the 3DS.

No downsides, I got a USB charger for both the DSlite and the DSi, which shares the same charger as the 3DS. It's convenient, and really given how cheap they are there's no reason not to pick it up.

I too bought a USB cable since my NA 3DS's charger has a different voltage than the outlets over here (so I have to use a transformer) and it works great. Whether via PC or the wall adaptor I use for my tablet, the 3DS charges fine.
