Nothing besides "immersion," I guess.

But honestly, I don't care about the 3D-ness at all. I'm stoked about the games that have been announced, and the graphical power of the thing. It's like a handheld GameCube, which is more than enough for me.

nintendo fans are "all about gameplay", so this completely superfluous upgrade should mean nothing to them, right?

It also has a motion sensor and a gyro sensor in it.

According to Iwata's Kid Icarus example, it makes it easier to judge the distance between you and your target. Take that as you will.
