The top screen is tough to make out when the system is turned off due to the upper portion of the lid being black on the inside. In the pictures, it just looks solid black, but there IS a screen there.

DS = Dual Screen

Actually, DS stands for "Developer's System", which was its codename, like Wii's "Revolution". But it just stuck.
