So what exactly does the gyroscope do?

From what I've read it seems like it gives the console knowledge of its orientation but for what reason?

If that is the case it might be so the screens appear in 3D no matter how you have it held because the screen would adjust so which would mean the ones on display at E3 where without the gyroscope. But I have no idea; anyone care to explain.

It actually does, if you played wario ware then you'd know what the gyroscope is for

You know those puzzles where you hold a box and tilt it to try and get a marble into one of the holes? That's what the gyroscope does.

Have you seen a Wii controller? That uses motion control.

as i understand it, without looking it up in depth on google.

motion detection which is basically an accelerometer gives the ability to sense horizontal and vertical tilt through 90degrees in either direction.

gyroscope adds in the abilty to sense twisting across a single plane, plus a gyroscope always knows which way is up.
so the ds would be always be calibrated the right way up.

not so with iphones or other devices with just accelerometers... youll notice if you hold them at an angle and switch a game on that uses it, the calibration is all out of sync.
