how much data (bytes) does the DS cart hold? (original DS, not 3DS)

How many mega bytes of data can the original DS game cartridge hold?
and if it can hold up to a gigabyte use a number that looks like this 1.2 gigabytes or 1.5 gigabytes (those are just examples)

Thanks

The largest currently released DS game is 512MB, or half a gigabyte. That's not quite the capacity of a normal CD, which is 700MB. There's no known limit, but that's the max amount currently used by companies. There is one game currently released using that size (Japan). And two more on the way (Ninokuni and the Love Plus Sequel).

so the 3DS game cards are supposed to use 4x more Bytes?
how much of this extra room do you think will be spent on the 3D graphics?

Basically yeah. But really, i think the 3D effect is handled more by the CPU, memory, and graphics hardware than the cartridge sizes.

Cartridge size is generally used for any of these reasons-
1- voice acting
2- streaming orchestral music
3- higher texture quality and 2D artwork (polygonal 3D models actually don't take up THAT much space, it's the texture detail that does)
4- content (story, length, level design, levels themselves

There are more game assets that use cartridge size, but the 3D effect is most likely handled by the actual display and the processor of the system.

And yeah, 3DS cartridges will (initially) support 4x as much capacity than the largest current DS game. It may very well get larger in the future. They are already half way to a DVD's capacity, get to 4GB and we'll have that! :P

Kingdom Hearts is 256 MB.

Most of them had 64 MB, then the bigger games like RPGs 128, very little selection has 256.

Right now, the 3DS is limited to 2GB, so I'd say most games would fall around 1.5 and bigger ones to 2.
