The analog will improve old DS games!

Yus! Like Super Mario 64 and similar games that had control issues due to the crappy D pad on the DS (Tomb Raider Legend and Rayman 2 also come to mind). The 3DS will give them a new lease of life!

No. Using common sense, you can see that it's flat-out impossible to have true analogue support for DS games, as they weren't even programmed for it.

The best you can hope for is using the slide pad as a substitute for the d-pad, but that's not analogue, most obviously because there would only be eight-directional input.

The original DS games will not be able to take advantage of the slide pad because they were not programmed for it. Just like how some PSX classics on the PSN store like FF7 cannot have full analog control for movement. You can still use the analog stick in replace of some of the buttons but you will not be able to use it for 360 degree movement.

Like others have said, there is probably little chance of the analog stick being analog. There is the possibility of the analog stick being used as a replacement for the D-pad, but it would still just be replacing a D-pad, and as such, not allow for full analog control.

...well most, if not all virtual console games work with analog. so there may be a good chance.

plus not all the games use the d-pad anyway so in those the slide pad would not be able to be used.
