Seriously, it seems like it would be really awkward to play DS games (not 3ds) with the d-pad down there. It makes more sense to just swap them.

The focus of the 3DS will be 3DS games and we can expect most 3DS games to be polygonal 3D. An analog stick works much better for that type of gameplay than a D-Pad.

like the original classic controller design, nintendo fanboys will defend this to the death even though it is a bad positioning, for ds games on it anyway. I imagine castlevania would be annoying unless they make the slide pad act as a d-pad when playing ds games.

If the 3DS is going is going to be mostly 3D games then the slide pad is going to be used more than the d-pad. The slide pad is supposed to be more important now.

If you don't mind changing the position of your thumb from the D-pad to the analog stick or from the buttons to the analog stick, then you won't find this a bother.
Must have: Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Metroid: Other M, Paper Mario,
Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and Kid Icarus: Uprising

You know, it's funny. I haven't seen Typs in ages, yet in his absence, there's a bunch of these topics. It's cruel I tell ya!

I'm still going with the theory that the slide pad will be able to mimic the dpad when playing DS games.
