Why is there always a shortage of launch units?

I mean... companies are not dumb. They KNOW that there is going to be like 30+ million people who all want to buy one at launch, why can't they just manufacture that many so that jerks can't resell the stupid thing for over nine thousand on ebay?

I'm assuming that they can't keep up with the demand, and they can't manufacture that many units in a short amount of time I guess

Because people like me buy multiple consoles at launch to gain profit from people like you.

Because they don't know how many people are going to be buying it on Launch day.

I'd rather not have another Atari E.T. fiasco.
