That the 3DS doesn't allow you to play your own music during games. It's possible on the PS3 on the 360 and PS3, so I've sorta taken it for granted.

It can already store music from SD cards, so would a simple system update be possible? Or is the 3DS physically impossible of doing so? Because honestly, I'm not going to bother getting a new version of the 3DS a year from now just for this feature and a larger screen (sadly though I think Nintendo would jump at the chance of doing so...)

Too bad, because I was really looking forward to using some SMG and Mario Super Sluggers music for Mario Kart races.

Well im sure its possible if the developers include it (like with endless ocean wii), but yeah it would be nice. Although Ps3 doesnt allow custom soundtracks in most games, its a very small number.

Yeah, but still, some > none.

Well, I suppose I can always just listen on my laptop when I play the game sometimes.

That's something I like bout my Xbox if I'm playing StreetFighter for example and I know I'm gonna be "in the lab" as they say I can jam out and charge my MP3.

So could this theoretically be a thing added in via a software update?

I probably wouldn't use it anyway. The games music would probably fit much better than any music I have. And besides, if I wanted to listen to my own music I would just lower the volume and play my own music.

Rumor has it Animal Crossing 3DS will allow music to be played from the SD card via in-game music box. Whether or not it was just rumor or not has yet to be seen (since I haven't looked into it any further)
Mind currently in the gutter.
