Question about the 3DS serial number

#1Team_CocoPosted 7/15/2011 2:05:19 PM
So I'm selling my 3DS on eBay and someone is asking for the serial number before they buy it because they want to make sure it's legitimate and not a "knock off".

Is it safe to give them the number? Or is there any risk to that?

I don't see any problem here. What exactly could a person do with the serial number of a piece of hardware?

Your serial number is tied to your eShop account, so I wouldn't. Just tell them the first three digits of it.

So giving them the first 3 numbers will let them know if it's a legitimate 3DS and not a knock off?

It should do, but I'm not even sure if there are knock off 3DS's.

Well the potential buyer claims that he was already ripped off once because he bought a "Chinese Knockoff" and wants to make sure that doesn't happen again.

But if there is no such knockoff, then now I'm really suspicious as to why this person wants the serial number.

As stupid as this idea is, could he just want the coins for registering the system, without any intent to buy?

Isn't the serial number only used for extending the warranty? The PIN included in the box gives the coins.

just take some quality pics of the 3DS ( not the serial # ), show the home menu, pics of the manuals and all inserts, pics of the box if you still have it.. use a time/date sign with your eBay seller name in all pics.
