It is, but the automatic updating feature was only introduced with the last FW update.

what is the FW update ? there is no auto-updating for the system itself from Nintendo. You always get a notification through spotpass informing you an update is available and giving you the choice to update or not.

The last FW technically was for version 2.1.0-3 and the main content was that it fixed a freeze glitch in Ridge Racer. However, the automatic update thing was added in version 2.0.0-2.

If you have accepted automatic updates, what happens, if I remember correctly, is that it will automatically download the update, and then you'll get a notification which will then tell you that a new update is available.
So, in other words, I think it only automatically downloads the update, but doesn't actually execute or apply the update.

System Settings > Internet Settings > Spotpass > Automatic Software Downloads

It's at the last menu where you can enable or disable the automatic download function for the 3DS.

Hey, remember when they said that WiiConnect24 meant that updates are automatically downloaded and installed without turning the console on, seamlessly without us noticing?
And remember how what ended up happening was we get an annoying light at 3AM telling us to turn the console on to check an email to follow a link to download an update?
