What's going to happen to DSi and Dsi XL ?

#1little_fat_boyPosted 7/28/2011 3:56:06 AM(edited)
DS Lite has been discontinued already.. so do you think they'll do massive price cuts on DSi and DSi XL, or discontinue them too ? With the 3DS's new price point why would people even want the DSi/XL ( other than longer battery life or big screens on the XL ) ?

this will be interesting to see if Nintendo outright just kills the DSi line forcing people to go 3DS.

They won't drop the price on them, because it'd overshadow the 3DS.
So they'll either leave them alone, or kill them.

They should. It's been a year, everyone who wants an XL should have one already. With the new price of 3DS, it'd be silly to be wasting money continuing the DSi line. It costs money to make them, and they'd have to sell them for dirt cheap now.

they have to do something considering the DSi XL is $169.99.

killing the DSi line would be the best bet.

... is this a surprising concept or something? A successor comes out and eventually(particularly with Nintendo's products) the predecessor is discontinued and weened off the Market. It is just a matter of time. And it seems to be the trend that the successor platform is backwards compatible during this current generation so again, This is something surprising to people...?

In fact the obvious reasons you stated, those being the larger screens and superb battery life, are probably the 2 exact reasons to keep them around. I'd bet some kind of price drop will happen, I mean seeing in stores the DSiXL and 3DS probably almost literally right next to each other then you're going to have a tough call if you don't know exactly what software you want. But maybe that is Nintendo's business plan too... like if the see the XL is still the same price as theft 3DS then they would maybe feel more inclined to buy the latest model.

I'd bet all other DS's will discontinue in late 2012, possibly just before the holidays, but no way this year they'll die. I mean anyone forget that the DS has been on the market for 7 years now? And don't bring up the PS2 as it saw its last major "heavy hitter" release about 6-7 years into its lifecycle too and that was God of War II. So really its the same thing.

You forgot being region-free. Region-locking has become the anti-sale for me in recent years. There's no real reason for it to exist anymore.

no it's not surprising. I'm just wondering what Nintendo will do, kill the DSi lineup entirely or do a massive price cut and continue the line for a while.

except for a very few DSi enhanced games region locking isn't an issue with backwards compatibility. DSi and XL are region locked too for those games.

They're still selling well enough. And at the 3DS's new price point, the 3DS becomes a lot more appealing to potential DSi owners. That would not be the case if they dropped DSi price.
