If Nintendo went under, what would you want them to do?

Hypothetically speaking of course. All this gloom and doom is getting too big. Nintendo won't go under. Nor would I want them to. Competition is what's need for all consumers. For example the price drop. If Sony never entered the handheld market, I don't think it would have happened. Or people would have been forced to pay $600 for a PS3 in not for MS and the 360

But say they did go under. Would you want them to go third party a la Sega? Get bought or owned by either Sony or MS? Stop making consoles and go handheld only? I seem to recall Iwata saying Nintendo would do the latter if it ever happened

Being someone who generally owns all platforms bar PC (Have all current gen platforms, will soon buy 3DS, Vita and Wii U), I don't really have a particular loyalty to any company. It's the games that I follow.

But what I didn't understand was the some friends of my who are Nintendo fans, and even several N fans on the net have said they would prefer it if Ninetndo joined forces with Sony? Why?

Some have mentioned that Microsoft would butcher Nintendo a la Rare. That Sony are more likely to take risks with odd titles, or even leave Nintendo to their own devices, which they don't believe MS would do (and these are NIntendo fans speaking). Or that a Japanese company should stay with another Japanese comany in Sony. However if it did happen (which it won't), wouldn't it make most sense to got third party?

What do you think Nintendo should do if this happens?

Definitely third party, since that will allow them to do everything they do now except, obviously, not make consoles.

They should become a third party developer.

Iwata has never said that they'd 'go handheld only'. He only said that they'd stop making games altogether if their consoles failed, but that was a lie - they would almost certain;y start developing for other platforms. Businessmen do lie.

Fold altogether and bury all their IPs.

Nothing would be worse for gaming than having Nintendo's IPs butchered ala Rare and Sega. The day we see Mario shooting Pokemon in a first person shooter is the day gaming is truly dead. If Nintendo can't make it, it's time for some new blood to take over.

If Nintendo just went under entirely, then I'd imagine there'd be a lot of problems.

But disregarding all that, I'd prefer they team up with Sony. Microsoft wouldn't really know what to do with them.

It'd be the end of an era for sure. But given the choice between Nintendo folding and Nintendo "modernizing" all of their IPs to try to get some sales out of a market that doesn't support them (ala Capcom and most other Japanese devs), I'd take the former any day.

Okay maybe 'going under' was the wrong word to use. Probably should have said pulled out of the platform market like Sega.

Besides I like Sega at the moment. Sure Sonic has failed badly, but in recent times I've played several games published by them that I really like such as the The Yakuza's, Valkyria Chronicles series. Vanquish, Sakura Wars and many more
