Why is it called the 3DS again?

Autostereoscopic 3D, not polygonal 3D.

Now that you know what a 3DS is, go get one after the price cut.
If I were stuck on an island with Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Modern Warfare 2, I would play Super Mario Galaxy 2 first. People who agree: 222

It's not like Nintendo is the only one that does this. The movie industry started this "3D" term even though we technically already have 3D in movies. This stereoscopic 3D adds one depth cue out of fourteen and we were already viewing 12 of them with "2D" technology.
