How much does N. sell 3DS to retailers and how much does it cost to produce one?

I'm not really buying the whole "N. sells 3DS at a cost". I also checked this out:

How much is N. selling the console to retailers anyway?

DS and 3DS are similar in part costs at launch. Unless retailers are taking in more money or labor has gone up, Nintendo sellng at a loss is ridiculous. DS sold for $150 while 3DS is being sold for $170. If the 3DS is being sold at a loss, then the DS sold at even a bigger loss

No it's not just about the device parts. But still, the more pieces you sell, the more costs (development, ads) you're gonna cover with that money. Therefore, the whole N. is selling at a cost is definitely arbitrary.

If the part costs are similar
and the other costs haven't radically changed (why would they?)
and the DS wasn't selling at a loss at a lower price
Why would the 3DS be selling at a loss?

Now try actually reading things before blindly shooting your mouth off.

2. R&D for this system would naturally be higher, as it's incredibly powerful and makes use of a new technology. Touch screen tech was old even when the DS launched.

Wouldn't 1 increase the DS's cost per unit since there are fewer units to spread static costs around?
As for 2, again the key phrase is drastic increase.

The 3DS is the same technological leap that the DS was. Stereoscopic 3D has been around for decades. You do realize that it's just 2 screens projecting an image to each eye right? It's even older than touch screens.

If you're just looking at power and new tech, than just look at the PSP. The jump from GBA to PSP was huge but wasn't as costly as you would think.

Actually, the PS3 implemented 3D gaming before the 3DS was released... and there have been 3D consoles before the 3DS.
