after the Eshop update, i would have to press the power button two, sometimes three times when i have left the 3DS off for more than 24 hours to get it to turn on again. After this most recent small update, whatever it was, my system is back to turning on after one press! glad they patched that, was starting to worry nintendo might not bother

It still puzzles me how a power button can be altered via an update... :/

It cant. It only updates things on the system itself. I hardly believe it would fix this so called "power switch glitch".

^ Powering on and off is done through software, as it's safer than simply physically pulling the plug. Poke around your computron's settings and you'll find there are all kinds of things you can make the power button do. They generally work like "press: initiate shutdown (closes all programs, etc)" and "hold: shut down (unsafe)".

It's a firmware issue. Unlike Ye Olde Days where the power button operated as a physical relay, it's simply a button like any other on most modern systems, and it's up to the firmware to actually shut down the system properly.

Heh.
I suppose it's just about accuracy. I still have to press it the same number of times I did before the update.

^ This.

Everything is controlled by firmware/software etc these days. It would be the same reason a game freezes, but after a software update it doesn't. Or vise versa.
