Business-wise it probably makes sense right now but longer term Nintendo could go the way of Sega if they give up exclusivity of their big franchises. Personally I hope that doesn't happen.

I think that people fail to realize the value of Nintendo experimenting with third party development.

Nintendo does not have to stop making consoles. Imagine: An experimental division of Nintendo which exists to make iOS/smartphone/Facebook games?

Would be cool to have some form of Mario or other Nintendo brands on iOS devices.

I think they would devalue their current franchises and the Nintendo-brandname this way.

investors dont even play games, they know nothing about gaming.

They just see a fad and what nintendo should do to make money

They could care less about the quality of the games

I do not think that anyone outside of the most devote fans would lose respect for these brands.

I guess as long as the smartphone games are different from those on the main consoles so that the appeal of their own hardware is not diminished then it could work out. Right now they seem really focussed on getting the 3DS established as a device people will take everywhere with them but it's hard to compete against the convenience factor of the smartphone.

Imagine if Nintendo allowed Elite Beat Agents to be on the iPad as well?

I don't get it. Making the same games they already do, but on a non-gaming device will make them more money? If people like their games that much they'd buy their consoles.

the quality of the games, the depth, the content would sink to lower than gameboy levels
