They actually do.
At The Warehouse in NZ, they group all the 3DS games under the title 3NDS games.

Nintendo's official acronym is Developer's System.

Dual Screen is a nickname picked up by them later.

Even then, still a nickname.

It could be for stocking or coding(?) purposes.

Like "GCN" for Nintendo Game Cube... and that's the only example I can seem to come up with. Were there any other Nintnedo systems where the letters/numbers didn't completely synch up with the official name?

That is the official coding of the GC, so yeah.
