Breaking something on purpose is something I'd rather not do, but Nintendo has no problem sucking up my money either.

I can neither confirm nor deny this is a good idea, but it does sound like it could work.

Fun fact: IF there is a redesign, you don't have to buy it.

Fun fact 2: Nintendo is a business. Of course they love taking people's money. That's how they, you know, stay in business.

Contrary to to this post's probable intent, I'll take it as a friendly warning. I have the option of just asking for a gift card, though.

I already said I don't have to; that I just want to. I willingly give Nintendo my money when I don't feel like I'm being blatantly exploited.

This particular time, though, I think I'll exploit one of those uh...

Loopholes.

Your a early adpoter and you knew there was going to be a revision at some point. Anyways it won't work.

If you want the redesigned product, then you should be willing to pay for it, not breaking your current model and trying to exploit a store warranty, that will result in you only getting the exact same model and color that you already have and as an end result losing your ambassador status and/or games because you used the store's warranty instead of Nintendo's official one.

u should read the whole contract. everything is at their discretion. in the "under what is covered" specifically. it is their option to replace it with a remanufactured item or a gift card. which means it is solely up to them what you get. you dont get to choose. it also states that you are responsible for backing up the software and they are not liable if data is lost.

i dont like target warranties. read the whole contract. if you bought your 3ds on a visa signature card or a credit card with a similar program, it automatically doubles the life of your manufacturers warranty for FREE. and then, beyond that, you can purchase longer plans thru your card for less than the target warranty and with better coverage.

From the page I linked above:

"Call toll-free to either be issued a gift card for the full product purchase price (excluding taxes) or sent a replacement product of like kind and quality."

And I wouldn't even try this without first asking if I can move my data.

Edit: Also, this is Target, not Best Buy.

Update: You win, naysayers. I checked, and I can't do this and still keep my Ambassador games because I have to send the 3DS in by mail. Time to get a refund on that extended warranty. I guess if I really want, I'll just buy the redesign, transfer, then sell the old model.
