As long as you press the HOME button, it'll save a state. If you just shut the system off without going to the home menu, you'll lose your save.

Before you ever close your 3DS, press the HOME button. If you don't, it won't save your VC game if the 3DS dies.

There is also the option for Game Notes where you can scribble down your passwords and make maps and stuff. Just head to the main 3DS menu and look at the top row of icons, Notes should be right there.

Yeah, good luck recognizing the distinct differences between certain characters after writing them in that. haha

This is why I wish they would just translate and start offering us the Famicom Disk System version. It has three save files.
