I'm pretty sure only the Zelda games had actual save capabilities, and other than dying, the only way to do so involves tricks with the second controller (you can switch with L+R+Y, I think). I forget the button combination though.

But just hit the "Home" button to close the game and it'll save your place in any of the games.

Just tested Golf with a hard shutdown and restart. The game has an auto-save feature. All of my HOF shots and tournament data was retained with no extra steps.

You can press the home button and close the game to pause where you currently are. You cannot create save points though.

The Legend of Zelda and The Legend of Zelda II: Adventure of Link -

1. Press Start.
2. Press L+R+Y to switch to controller 2.
3. Press Up+A to bring up the save menu.
4. Press L+R+Y to switch to controller 1.
5. Select save.
You can also save when die.

Metroid - Enter the password you are given after you die.

Super Mario Bros, NES Open Tournament Gold, Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong Jr, Wrecking Crew, and Yoshi - The game only saves your high scores.

Yikes. I've never gonna be able to be SMB. O_O Maybe I'll just play the All Stars version. (Though, I do see to be better at the handheld versions)
