Moving to Japan with an NA 3DS...

..is it possible?

I mean, would I be able to download updates and such for an NA 3DS in Japan, or am I SOL?

Yeah, but you'll need to import games

Yeah it's fine. Your 3DS will still (only) connect to NA update/spotpass servers.
You will be locked out of anything that is IP region locked (NIntendo Video is the only one I can think of currently. Possibly netflix if they IP region block as well.)

But for everything else you'll be fine.

Yeah, and I am also assuming that the eShop won't work either.

3DS is a direct successor of DSi, region-wise. Most info you need to know remains identical.

NA 3DS accordingly does NOT have a system menu option for Japanese. It means while original DS games you buy in Japan should play, a few will be unable to actually use the Japanese language they contain. Weird as that sounds.

I do not own an NES console.

Last time I was in Canada, Netflix didn't work very well. Very few movies would Stream (I think all I could watch before I gave up trying was Iron Man 2).

I know netflix in Canada is somewhat new, though. I'd assume Netflix wouldn't work in Japan based on my experience.

Netflix is available in US and CA. Not anywhere else in the world.

The problems you've experienced would most likely be related either to the application itself or your Internet connection, and not due to region.

there are some stores that sell import games, JPY stronger than USD, and you can probably find a number of online retailers that offer a much better service and fast delivery.

the difference would probably be negligible

edit; starfox would cost me $68 in Aus (EB Games)

Starfox (JPN) - playasia - $65
Starfox JPN (rakuten) - $45-55AUD

so for me importing is still cheaper than buying games in Australia, i'd expect a similar thing from US-> Jpn.. unless I'm thinking things through backwards.
