it's more like a plot and character heavy turn based strategy

FF tacrics. Advance War type of thing?

Fire Emblem is Advance Wars with characters instead of disposable soldiers, and an actual plot.

so, i'm guessing FE is an RPG then? (not joking, I seriously don't know anything about the series)

Kinda. it's grid based, and more "tactical" then most rpgs

You can't change classes in FE8. There are promotion trees, but you can't change classes at will. You're thinking of Shadow Dragon

And they're an even better way for them to use up all their weapons

its like a rock, scissors, paper version of chess...
you have different tiles (such as sea, forest, mountain... these tiles gives buffs and debuffs)
each weapon your character is using, has a weakness as well as a weapon its good against (there are only 3 weapon types afaik... axe>lance>sword>axe again)

the gameplay revolves around moving your pieces to kill the opponents king piece, while taking advantage of the terrains and weapon triangle

most of the time you'll be outnumbered, so you'll have to use the weapon triangle and terrain to your advantage (as well as positioning.. for example, you usually let your mobile assassins stay behind an armoured knight)

also its a turn based system... so you move your whole army, then the enemy makes its move... rinse and repeate until objective is completed
