ITT - Someone tech savvy explains how to charge new electronics.

I get conflicting answers from everyone.

- Let it die, then fully charge. Repeat three times.
- Don't let it die too often.
- Charge it right away.
- Don't charge it too often.

I don't know what to believe anymore. Wtf do I do with my XL? lol.

If anyone knows, also elaborate for things like smartphones and PCs. Is there a general rule to follow or does it vary by device?

Generally I've heard that it's best to recharge devices when they're getting fairly low in power, rather than continuously recharging them when they're more than ~50% full. Something about recharging when the battery is near empty capacity lets it keep it's "memory" on knowing how much actual lifespan does exist in the battery, and it can tell that information to the device accurately. Do a search on Lifehacker for more info about rechargeable batteries.

The kind of battery that the XL and 3DS have is damaged if you let it drain completely.

Of course, there's also collective damage from the recharging process, but that won't be noticeable until many charges later. I forget what the manual says, maybe after 500 charges.

Otherwise, I don't know if there's such a thing as an optimal charging point or not.

DO NOT let it die. The let die and recharge thing is for old ass batteries and is pointless with the batteries we use now a days.

I just try to charge when it gets down to 2 bars as a general rule, but you really shouldn't have to worry too much with batteries these days.
