Overall, Sticker Star is as far removed from Super Paper Mario as that was from The Thousand Year Door. While you might lament the departure the series has taken from its original RPG roots, this hybrid of adventure and action found in Sticker Star stands out as one of the best entries in the series.

Although it would have been nicer to see Nintendo pick one of two directions rather than offer something that perches on the fence between platforming thrills and RPG depth, Sticker Star is nonetheless a beautiful and eventually engrossing adventure, once it hits its stride.

The fact that Thousand-Year Door has an 87 blows my mind; that game is a masterpiece.

This. Idk how anyone could think the first was better unless they just REALLY liked the partners or had nostalgia.

probably because PM TYD wasn't out yet and at the time PM came out, it was pretty good since that was the only version of Paper Mario out then. I'm pretty sure it would be different if they somehow reviewed it again after playing the 2nd game.

Because it has more reviews (55 rather than 15) and Metacritic doesn't take that into account in its score. Combine with that the heavy variance in the average score on certain sites and the fact that Metacritic does absolutely nothing to account for it (no normalization or anything) and the incredibly inaccurate conversion of letter grades to scores (C = 50? What?) and you get a number that's marginally more useful than a random number generator.

naaaaaaaaaah

Everyone hates SPM because it wasn't turn based, and I like turn based better, but what really defines the series is its dialogue, humor, and themes, and SPM did that just as well as TTYD and better than StSt and PM, IMO
