the ps2 was an unprecendented success spanning practically every genre with over 60 AAA games/90+ to boot. even the hd twins havent passed it up and the 3ds needs a lot of everything before being comparable to the wii let alone the ps2.

Nope.

The DS never did it. I will be surprised if the 3DS will ever meet DS levels.

Maybe. I hated the PS2's library for the most part. Sly, Jak, and Ratchet were the only good exclusive series for it. My favorite from that gen was the Xbox. Nothing beats Far Cry, Halo, GTA, Doom, and Conker all in one place. (Everything in my opinion of course).

In Japan, maybe, but not anywhere else. Because it's a portable in the West that means right off the bat multiplayer games are gimped, most Japanese games won't make it over (the system being region locked makes that even worse), and most Western developers won't take it seriously to begin with.

The PS2 did everything, the 3DS has those three huge hurdles to overcome if it ever hopes to compete. Nonetheless, it's a pretty great system.

The reasons I'd use have already been stated. In its own right though I imagine the 3DS will do well and have its own flavor. I will be curious to see if it sees the same overall success of the DS though.

As an owner of the PS2 who bought it Day 1 after being VERY satisfied with the PSX, I was underwhelmed by that console's library.
Tbh I felt like that entire generation was awful.

The PS2's library was one of the most varied ever. Extreme sports, sports, platforming, action, adventure, sandbox, WRPG, JRPG, shooters, stealth, puzzle games, racing games, fighting games,rhythm games... what exactly did it do wrong?

It's already on track to IMO. I haven't been this please with a system since the PS2. I even get the same vibes. Hopefully the jrpgs will continue to show up and the first party continue to be interesting.
