Why is this region locked?

Any good explanation as to why they did not want something like NA players being able to play japanese games on NA systems?

If a game sells for more money in a particular region and it's cheaper to import if from another, it makes financial sense to implement region locking.

That said, I don't know that it's been a big enough issue TO go ahead and implement it.

It's the other way around, actually. NOJ doesn't want to lose profits to Japanese players importing cheaper US releases.

I don't know if this is really true, after waiting to buy Pokemon Dream Radar and Pokedex 3DS, the price was exactly the same in USA as in Japan.

I assume it's because they want local shops to actually see sales, if a game takes a phenomenally long time to release a game and it happened to come out in another country a year ago, having no region locking might encourage people to import.

Sure, importing would be great, but if everyone imported, the true sales figures would skewed towards wherever it was released first as actual sales, with releases in other countries severely dwindling.....

I just hope that since the 3DS has a method of downloading games via the eShop, that companies are encouraged to release games to test the waters, as releasing it straight to the eShop would remove cartridge production costs and can enable patches to be released (im assuming that the MK7 Patch is a handheld-side patch, and not an augmentation of the cartridge itself).

Least to say that they shouldn't leave it to just 3DS games alone, they could probably release DS titles if they want to....even though it seems slightly redundant, unless Nintendo agrees not to take a cut of the profits, assuming that the title was released in a country where the reception was OK, or is part of a series that has a loyal following. (this is to mostly save potentially obscure games that released in only 2 countries, but omitted one of the large players, being either UK or US)

The region lock has always been my main complaint about the 3DS. I like to import, especially if i like a game and its not ever coming to the US. And spending $400 on another 3DS just ti import is just plain dumb.
