Mah final opinion on New Super Mario Bros. 2

It's okay. After playing the game up to the middle of world 6, I felt a combination of apathy and a desire to free up space to download different games, so I deleted it. Some of the levels are decent, but for the most part, my motivation was for me to complete it, so that no one can claim that I didn't experience the whole game. But the way I figure it, if I'm in the sixth world and I don't feel like beating it because it's a fun game, then I don't think it really earned that completion. Thankfully for me, I regard such a situation as "completion". I gave it my all, I gave it a chance - in the end, it's not a case of me overlooking the game, but rather, not caring enough. That game is done.

Just a random comment of the game, I really hated how useless the Star Coins were. Wii gave you neat little trick videos, 3D Land required them to progress. 2 just gave you access to Mushroom Houses. Of which, only the gold ones were interesting; it's piss easy to get power-ups (I swear it takes no time at all to be Raccoon/Fire Mario and have an extra item in your inventory); getting 1UPs had almost no meaning because they come without any effort; and with the gold ones, all it did was give you an interesting power-up with no real pay-off. New Super Mario Bros. 2 should be a teaching tool for Nintendo to take from. They need to learn from this mistake - they need to learn about pay-off. You can't just make a 1 million coin goal post and reward the player with a vanity item. 1 million coins should give them an awesome level pack, or a new playable character, or new music, or new graphics, or a new power-up, or a new set of levels entirely (like 3D Land). The game felt really lazy, and par for the course. New Super Mario Bros. U looks a lot, lot better. That U exists tells me that New Super Mario Bros. 2's developers were very conscious in their decision to do so little to make an entertaining product. And that world design! I mean, is there an excuse that SMB2 and 3 were vastly better for their world designs than New SMB 2? Absolutely not.

PS: Razieru, please don't

Are we talking about Super Mario World as well?

Super Mario World had tricks to get too many 1UPs; getting too many 1UPs in New Super Mario Bros. 2 requires you to play it, and nothing more.

EDIT: I felt it important to point out that Yoshi's Island DS gives you too many 1UPs (I think I had 200+ lives by the final world).

Seriously, in what way do 1UPs add to the Mario experience, exactly? They don't enhance the challenge because you never get close to being in danger of game over-ing.

I don't like Game Overs. They artificially just extend your gameplay. I hate playing the same thing over again. I'm glad 1UPs are given away like candy now. They sorta keep track of how much you died, so that's one use for them. It's also fun to see them go up.

Why not just eliminate game overs AND 1UPs? You don't have to have either of those; they're just a relic of days gone by.

This actually isn't a bad idea. The Game Boy Zelda games don't undo your progress when you die or offer 1ups, they just tally up your total deaths. More games should do that now.

Nintendo needs to stop spamming New Super Bros. games and go back to the SM64/Mario Sunshine/Mario Galaxy style

....NSMB games are 2D platformers while those other games are 3D platformers. Thought I'd point that out for you.

I'm pretty sure this will be the first and LAST NSMB for the 3ds.

I agree fully with the TC. It was never a bad game, just a terrible value. It also needed game overs, extra lives were too easy, and I was never tense during any levels since I knew if I died I could just use one of my 300+ lives to try again.

I also feel the game would have been a TON better in true 2D. Rayman Origins looks gorgeous, and I want to see a NEW New Super Mario Bros looking like that.
