I posted that topic and locked it before actually testing it out for myself. I popped in Black 2 into my 3DS XL and I held the start button as I pressed A to select the game. That didn't seem to make a difference, so I reset it and tried select. That didn't make a difference either. I tried start again to no avail.

Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Thanks again guys.

EDIT: Something I'd like to point out is that the top screen isn't filled up all the way, there are black bars on the side. But the game seems more pixelated than it should be...Is that just how the game is? I could've sworn I booted it up without holding start or select and it looked like this.

Super edit:

Alright. Figured it out lol. Hold Start or Select until the game fully loads up. It'll be in little DS mode.

The bars you're seeing on the sides of your top screen are because it stretches a DS game to fill the screen letterbox format, not widescreen. There's no way to have a DS game fill those black bars you're seeing.

The XL has different sized pixels than the regular DS, so even at their native resolution, games still won't look exactly as they do on a DS or DSi screen.

"To play a DS in the original resolution of the DS, select the game from the
menu and hold both Start and Select while the game loads. (This also works
with the Virtual Console GB/GBC titles.)"

From the FAQ.

You will absolutely know when you boot it in DS mode. The game takes up like a quarter of the screen.

It actually takes up a DS screen's worth of space - hardly a quarter. :P
