Do you think they will actually release a 3rd iteration soon? I'm planning to buy a 3DS XL next week. I don't know if I should buy now or wait for the next one.

Nintendo DS November 21, 2004
Nintendo DS lite March 2, 2006
Nintendo DSi November 1, 2008
Nintendo DSi XL November 21, 2009
Nintendo 3DS February 26, 2011
Nintendo 3DS XL July 28,2012

As you can see it's pretty cut and clear with a minor exception of a few being less, Nintendo releases a new version every year and a half.

The MOST likely date of the next revision is November 21, 2013.

Never. Also, the universal rule that "all peripherals will always fail" means it wouldn't be useful anyway. No developers will force the use of a device that only half of people own, because that instantly cuts their sales by half.

You mean like how Nintendo release the Nintendo DSi? Where then not all the user base cold use the "i" camera and ram on "i" enabled games. Oh I see.

I said LE, just to let the people who have the money and freaking want it, get it.

How would it hurt them? A ton of extra money.

A ton of money from developing a new system model that no one really wants going by the numbers of a) 3DS hardware, b) Circle Pad Pro, c) Developers supporting it (not even Nintendo titles support it). I think I can see why it doesn't exist.

Now playing: Paper Mario SS, Castlevania OoE, Mark of the Ninja, SFxT.

Why did they make the DSi then? Which had exclusive features that only specific games took advantage of or could even play?

In fact it was the "3rd" revision of the DS that they made this upgrade.

Yes, and how many games are there that require the DSi functionality? (or even enable it?)

Camera support didn't become commonplace until 3DS, since every 3DS has it standard. Not just a super limited subset of the install base.

This really is pretty much universal. Every peripheral ever made has fallen victim to this in exactly the same way. Kinect is the closest thing to a counterexample that exists.
