There's nothing to defend. The main counter argument to all these horrible design decisions is, "I'm having fun, so it's a great game!" or "You only hate it because it's not TTYD."

For the most part, yeah. The game just played it way too safe in terms of Mario games. Like it didn't feel like I was playing Paper Mario, but more or less just Mario. That and while the combat is RPG, it's very stripped and as basic as possible. Since there isn't even an EXP system, battles almost feel entirely pointless. During my playthrough I avoided as many enemies as possible, which is exactly the opposite of what I do playing other RPG's.

88 Fingers Louie were a hardcore punk band. 88 Fingers Eddward was a nickname on Ed Edd'nEddy. Pretty cool reference.
