Are Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games tied to each other?

I've been wanting to get into this series for a long time and seeing how a 3DS one is gonna be released soon, I figured this was a good time to do it.

But, are the games connected to each other story wise? Would I be missing something significant if I start with the 3DS one instead of the previous ones?

Also, if you think I should play a different Mystery Dungeon before, either for story or gameplay, please do tell.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not a big fan, but from what I understand it's implied that they're all in the same universe, but just a long way apart. There is little to no running story.
I could be wrong though.

They aren't connected but I highly recommend you play Explorers of Sky.

Also if you like 5th Gen, you may want to wait for the 3DS one first. The general opinion seems to be that Gates to Infinity is not necessarily a bad game, but some long-time fans of the first two games are disappointed with it for removing certain recurring gameplay/story elements and a massive chunk of the playable roster.

Other than that though, Explorers of Sky is a great game, and has the most content of any of the games released so far, so it's not at all a bad place to get into the series. And the games are not connected, but Explorers does make a lot of minor allusions to Pokemon species, musical themes, and story elements from Rescue Team.
