I was considering the NERF Armor, but it's too big for me to carry around with me since I have an XL.

I've decided on this silicone/hard case combo:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/130759359658?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

http://www.ebay.com/itm/370712507407?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

But I remember getting that silicone case for my brother's 3DS before and it sucked -_-

Finally, I was deciding on this aluminum case:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Aluminium-Hard-Shell-Case-Skin-Cover-For-Nintendo-3DS-XL-N3DS-LL-/300789132555?pt=Video_Games_Accessories&hash=item46086ded0b

But then I remembered that any part that isn't covered is gonna get the paint faded off and it leaves some residue when you take it off -_-

So yeah, should I be fine with my current combo, or go for something else?

I want something that provides enough protection yet isn't so bulky that I can carry it when going out. I have a HORI hard case for my Vita, but apparently the 3DS version isn't so good.

1) Put your XL into the plastic-foam sleeve that came in your XL box.
2) Put the foam sleeve into this: Order one of these: https://club.nintendo.com/rewards-details/a/18506.do
3) Put the CN pouch in your pocket.
4) When you want to play the XL, remove the XL from the inner foam. It will retain its shape inside of the CN pouch.
5) When you are done playing your XL, place a microfiber cloth between the screens, close it, and slide it back into the foam, then pull the drawstrings on the pouch.

Perfect way to carry around your 3DS in your pocket without needing a giant Nerf briefcase.

.....That sounds like way too much work and I intend to carry it with a clip on my pants.

Sliding it in and out of a pouch that fits in your pocket sounds like more work that lugging around a bulky hard case for it everywhere?

I never understood the concept of applying outside shells to systems to protect them at the expense of portability. Unless you are VERY prone to dropping thing, yes it does protect the system, but if you never take it off, you might as well just be carrying around a 3DS XXXXXXL because you never give yourself the opportunity to experience the actual system buried underneath all of that protection.

"Experience the actual system"? You must be one of those people who don't put a case on their phone because you want to retain the "true beauty" of the phone. And then you drop it.

I paid too much money for this thing to risk any real damage to it.

None at all.

I also don't take it out of the house, the only place I take it is from my chair, to the bed, to the bathroom ( not necessarily in that order).

I clean it once before playing, and once after playing before putting it on the charging dock
( which most cases don't seem to let you do either)

And just like my smartphone, it is in pristine condition since the day I got it.

If you can get one of these, go for it. I think play-asia has them in stock. http://www.hori.jp/products/3ds/3ds_tpu_cover/

Only exceptions are;
-I use a psp sleeve that velco's shut & has a pocket
-I don't use the foam sleeve
