Must have games.

I'm thinking of getting a 3DS soon. I've never had a DS or Gameboy (any portable gaming device really) so please list older games that are accessible to 3DS as well. They don't have to be AAA games either, I enjoy hidden gems.

I definitely want to get a Pokemon game. Which would be the best to start with (that's playable on 3DS)?

Thanks!

Zelda OoT, yes even if you beat the original 7 times over, you should still get this.

Samurai Warriors Chronicles if you like action hack and slash.

If you enjoy mindblowing stories, I can strongly recommend getting 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors (DS), and it's sequel Virtue's Last Reward (3DS). Don't skip 999, it's essential to the story.

It's hard to explain why they're amazing without them sounding boring/unappealing, so I'm just going to link you to the gamerankings pages and let the reviews do the work for me:

999: http://www.gamerankings.com/ds/961351-nine-hours-nine-persons-nine-doors/articles.html
VLR: http://www.gamerankings.com/3ds/641334-zero-escape-virtues-last-reward/articles.html

Aside from those, consider Kid Icarus: Uprising, Super Mario 3D Land, Resident Evil: Revelations and Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars; they're great.

Virtue's Last Reward.

Well, yes. I would recommend it, but if he hasn't played 999, he can't play VLR.
