Someone explain me how the region lock is bringing Nintendo more money

There is more to translation for a game than just translating from one language into another. For games that have voice acting, there is casting, recording tracks, and applying those tracks to the game correctly. As for games with text only, i.e. Fire Emblem, there is the translation, making sure the translation makes sense, and wrapping the text into the text bubble and/or box (it is NOT automatic).


I can read and understand japanese just fine, region locking screws me over cause i'd actually buy japanese games for my 3DS

If you know Japanese, there's really no point in owning any region 3DS other than Japanese... It's not like there are or ever will be any worthwhile American or European exclusives.
