999 and VLR are must-haves if you like puzzles and great stories.

999 and VLR are the best, though Ghost Trick is really good too. Hotel Dusk and Trace Memory are alright.

999 has become my favorite handheld game but VLR might destroy that.

If you can find it for cheap (I'd say $5-7 is the right price), then get James Noir.
It's short, and not as good as Layton, but it's in that same vein and is still pretty fun.
