3D Land didn't seem to get nearly as much hype as NSMB2. NSMB2 at the very least had the reputation of its predecessors on DS and Wii, plus the whole million coin thing and the DLC and coming at the start of Nintendo offering full retail games on the e-shop. I don't recall much promotion at all about 3D Land, it seemed not much was known about it until it was actually released and people got to play it.

But 3D Land just seems a lot more innovative, IMO the second best 3D Mario after Mario 64. Its just more fun to play and explore.

SM3DL belongs in every 3DS owner's collection. NSMB2 is optional.

3d land was at least trying to be different by being a standard linear 3d experience that hadn't been seen yet...it was a bit too short IMO but the Bowser battles were epic and it has a certain distinct charm to it.

NSMB2 is just a copy and paste job where Nintendo wanted to take a vacation and SOMEHOW get paid for it.

3D Land by far.

NSMB2 has more content though, and the downloadable levels are really special (they are more fun than the main course). If the entire game were as good as the DLC, then I think it would match or even exceed 3D Land's quality.

NSMBU is a much tougher comparison.

The thing is, as others have stated, NSMB2 isn't a bad game by any means. The problem with the game, is that there should've been a lot more to it. In fact, DLC was starting to become really good, and they ended that early. It fell way short of innovation, and motivation. I can't help but feel that NSMB actually had more to the game than its sequel.

Super Mario 3D Land was greater than I was expecting it to be. There's still something missing with the game, that I can't place my finger on.

3D Land by a long shot. NSMB2 is a decent game, but SM3DL is nearly a masterpiece.

Super Mario 3D Land grabs New Super Mario Bros 2 by the neck. However, I liked them both.
