No stats no RPG
As far as I'm concerned a game needs 3 major things to be considered an RPG
1. Levelling system - Stats
2. Equipment - Loot
3. Customisable abilities
you just described soulcalibur 3
And Bioshock. And Castlevania Lament of Innocence. And Dissidia. And Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3. And many RPGs don't allow customizable abilities, like FF IV (I hear you can in the DS version but not the original), Shadow Hearts, or Grandia 2.
