Same games on multiple systems. Questions

If I own a 3DS and an XL...

Do physical games save to the cartridge or to the SD card?

Can I just take the game out of one and put it in the other and continue playing or is there some issue, like, do I need to move the SD card back and forth between them as well?

Regarding e-shop games.. I understand they are tied to the system, not an "account", right?

So, if I buy a game on one 3DS, then I cannot re-download it on the other?

What if I move the SD card that the e-shop game is on to the other system, will it play?

Retail games saves on the cart itself, not the SD card or the system's built-in memory.

Swapping Sd cards won't do any good, info on the memory card is tied to a specific 3DS, that means if you swap memory cards none of the systems will recognize what's in the new memory card.

Carts don't save to the sd card, you just switch and play.

Eshop titles are tied to the system, you can't put the sd card into another system and play a downloaded game, it just won't work.

Gotcha. Thanks guys. So, even if I own one 3DS and buy an eshop games...and then it breaks or I end up selling it and later on buying another..then I won't be able to get that eshop game ever again? That's it it's gone?

If your 3DS breaks you might be able to get Nintendo to let you have your games on a new 3DS, not sure but it would be worth a try. If you sell your 3DS, then later buy another, you would have to buy the games again.

If it breaks, Nintendo can get your eshop titles back if you send it to them.

Some people have been reporting getting in contact with Nintendo, providing the serial number of their 3DS and getting everything eShop related back on their new system.

You can perform system transfers too, if you need to sell your 3DS just transfer the data to a new 3DS.
