Go check the region code. It should be printed on the box somewhere. Chances are it's ASI region, instead of US or JP. If so, it uses US firmware and connects to US eShop. If its text is Japanese, then it's definitely JP and can only play JP games.

mine said sg/mly version.I read somewhere saying MH4 is also comfirmed playable onHK/TW 3ds.
