Force Swapnote to download new messages?

OK, so my friends have asked me recently if I received their Swapnote messages. I have not, and my 3DS won't notify me and opening Swapnote doesn't start downloading new notes. So, I'm wondering, is there any trick to getting Swapnote messages earlier?

Click on the icon next to the "Write a note" icon on the bottom of the touchscreen and press "SpotPass Delivery Check".

You might have to hit it a few times or something.
