TWEWY actually sold less than 200K during its first year in Japan. That would be five months.

A ton of press? You mean on Western sites which have no bearing on Japanese sales?

The game got a sequel greenlit soon after the game released. If the game bombed that wouldn't be the case.

It sold quite good, not as good as DQ/FF/Pokemon/Monster Hunter, but good enough.

In the Japanese version's case, you get a Club Nintendo serial as well as Square Enix Members points, just sayin'.
