That's what I've gathered from all the posts. Should I be excited?

Yeah, its where Nintendo announces their new games/upcoming projects and what not. They actually show more off during their directs than they do at E3 XD.

Pretty much. I've only watched one myself and it was basically a short E3 press conference just without any huge reveals.
RIP City of Heroes and Paragon Studios - Killed by NCsoft.
Not changing this line until Dimitri, Moosh, and Ricky appear in another LOZ game (7/20/09)

They used to be not very good but the last few have been full of stuff.

Last one(for Wii U) announced

Wnd waker HD
X(monolith soft ARPG)
Yoshi's land
GBA virtual console for Wii U
Wii U virtual console will support Miiverse and Off-TV play
Confirmation of Mario kart, 3D mario and Zelda
Firmware updates in spring and summer improving load times and OS speed.
And more

So get cautiously optomisitc as they are on a roll here.

I wouldn't say it's a mini E3. E3 is about a lot more than just game announcements and glimpses of footage. Although E3 really isn't what it used to be anymore these days. Only Nintendo seems to be able to keep tight-lipped on what they have coming, but for all other companies practically every single title is revealed before the press conference (with a few of them leaking 1 or several days in advance at the latest).

I see Nintendo Direct as Nintendo's gift to consumers. E3 is all about creating hype through press. Nintendo Direct is Nintendo's way of letting their audience know what's coming to their Nintendo systems and to give them some insight on how the company works. In fact, that's why they are named Nintendo Direct.
