Question about the Layton Games..

Since Best Buy has Professor Layton and Kid Icarus Uprising on sale for $15 each, I was going to bite on it since these are games that are highly regarded as some of the best games on the 3DS. Since this is not Layton's first installment in the series, I was wondering if there are ties to previous games as far as story or can I pick it up and enjoy everything that is going on in the game? I didn't own a DS so I haven't played the other games.

Answers are appreciated. :)

The game is technically a sequel to the DS game Professor Layton and the Last Specter. Specter is basically the origin story of Layton+Luke so it introduces the characters and the setup for how the games that followed progressed.

There is no mention of the previous game though (to my knowledge), so each game can actually function as a stand-alone game. It's really not completely necessary to play the previous games as much in this series IMO.

There is some minor plot details and villains mentioned in both games that are building up to the story for the next Professor Layton. I'd recommend playing Last Specter before Miracle Mask.
