What is the point of region locking a console for Nintendo?

Wondering why Nintendo would region lock their console. Is there any benefit for them?

The only reason I can think of is for the different regions not to cannibalize each other in terms of sales. It's still a stupid reason as it may save the company some dough at the expense of pissing off fans (sorry EU P4 fans...),

Way to treat your loyal customers by preventing them from buying the game. It's not like they were pirating...

Australia and Japan (among other places) have far higher prices than say the US. Europe it's also generally cheaper to import I think.

I've always wondered why they have not stuck Australia in it's own region and separated UK from the rest of Europe if it is about prices.

Game prices here (UK) are not much more expensive that the US (3DS game can be got for around 29.99 ($45 or so) tax included), rest of Europe is apparently much more expensive from the way people go on about it, yet they are free to grab games from here.
