Etrian Odyssey IV is very good.

I enjoy the way the game progresses. I've yet to grind, and with careful planning, I feel as though I can reasonably take on enemies stronger than I am without TOO much effort. Reminds me of the first Dragon Quest game in that way.

I played the demo and it was possibly one of the worst experiences in a game I've ever played.

It took me 30 min of dicking around making a party and talking to people before it actually put me into combat. That's a terrible design for a demo I think.

Then the horrible grid travel system (while the scenery and graphics are amazing though), and they want you to draw your own map? Lol no. The combat was fun though, but after the first fight they put a huge monkey in my way and said wait till he goes away to pass him. Well it was almost impossible, every time I neared the exit he came close to me. Spent 10 min trying to get past him running back and forth until I aggroed him and and he one shot all of my party members because it wouldn't let me run away..

WTF was that? That is the game everyone likes?

I believe that you can automap it. I may be wrong.

Also, I got around the Baboon just fine.

Sounds like you must have a hard time with instructions then the games fault.

The grid system really threw me a curve ball, guess just the inexperience of navigating it made it really difficult to get past that guy. But then it wouldn't let me escape I just had to sit there and die? And what is with having to select all of my members and pick run away. I didn't get that either. I think I'll just pick up FE: Awakening for my turnbased strategy game.

I don't mean to be so negative. That demo really just got to me, I'm not used to sucking so badly.

The grid does take time to get used to but once you do it becomes easy. The Nomad Baboon is also easy to get around as it has a set pattern. Escaping is a big issue in the game though as it's annoying to attempt to escape battles but the game is kinda designed to make you think more then your standard RPGs.

I'm running with a party of 5 and it's still hard. But do I like it? Yes...very much.

I STILL get one shot KO'd by the kangaroos and the bears in the forest, but I will one day smite them.

Nothing more satisfying than the first time you can reliably auto battle a bear.

I like something about the game that you detest. Namely, drawing our own maps. There's something kind of rewarding about it. I once time couldn't figure out where to go because I drew a wall where there was none. I had to explore that floor for something I may have overlooked.
