Okay I died about 15 times on the first level, but after I got more used to it, I barely die anymore. IMO, Uprising on any difficulty 6.5 or above is much harder.

Agree/disagree? Am I just better at action/platformers than shooters?

I also think games like Zelda II and Super Mario Bros. are harder as well, but the latter mostly because of its physics. KI controls well.

From what I've heard a lot of what made the original on NES hard was crappy controls... which they fixed on the eshop version (though I think you can select classic controls?), along with some other changes...

I am using custom controls. Maybe that's it.

Because Kid Icarus works backwards. The first level is the hardest, with each level after becoming easier and easier.

But nobody ever finishes the first level.

Precisely what Toast said. People typically give up before completing stage one; they, going by NES logic, assume it only gets harder, and therefore regard it as one of the hardest, when in fact, it's quite reasonable.
