Free game-Mario 3D Land or Layton?

I know they are pretty different games, but does Mario 3D Land follow the typical platformer side scrolling game with better graphics or is it more similar to Super Mario 64? And I used to own the first Layton game a long time ago, it was entertaining at first but eventually got dull. Any changes or does it still follow the same pattern of trying to solve a mystery by doing puzzles along the way?

I prefer Professor Layton. The first one is petty compared to the newer ones. Mario is like Super Mario 64, but no overworld.

Didn't even think about Star Fox either. I played Star Fox 64 at my friends house once when it first came out years ago and that's about it. I'm not a huge follower of the series but if it's a good game I'd consider it.

Reminds me of a mix between SM64 and NSMB games, personally, with sunshine esque graphics (Especially on the fire)

3D Land is a fresh blend of both 2D and "3D" (64/Galaxy) playstyles. It retains the short, somewhat linear, speed-runnable feel of SMB1-World, but also allows you to free-fall and jump around in 3D space like the newer games. It gets a lot of flack around here, but it is easily in my top 5 Mario games of all time.

Layton is exactly the same as the first 4 games, only now instead of tapping all over the screen to find items you sort of drag around it with a magnifying glass. The story is still predictable and the gameplay consists of math brain teaser worksheets that substitute teachers would hand out on days that teachers didn't leave a lesson plan to keep students busy.

3D Land is a 3D game that plays like a 2D Mario game.

Also, I should mention I'm not one to normally like Mario games, but I'm really enjoying this one.

I love Layton games myself, but if you found the first one to be "eventually dull," I'm not sure you'll feel much differently about Miracle Mask. Most of the improvements in the Layton series over its five-game stretch have been mechanical smoothing of rough edges, more than actual changes to the basic formula.

Myself, I'd take Miracle Mask over 3D Land in a heartbeat, but it honestly sounds like you would probably enjoy the Mario game more.

Thanks for all the input guys. I went ahead clicked on redeem Mario 3D Land but have yet to get a code, I heard other people saying similar things. I'm assuming just to wait a bit for an email? I want to put some hours into Luigi's Mansion first anyways.
