Going to get Luigi's Mansion tomorrow for the promotional free game but...

For a person who bought the 3DS XL solely to play the latest Fire Emblem

Which of the 5 games for the promotion would you recommend? (I am guessing it is between Star Fox and Super Mario)

Wrong. It is between Super Mario and Layton :)

Starfox is fun and all but it's a port. Get something new instead!

If I didn't already own Professor Layton: Miracle Mask, i'd get that. Since I own it, i'd probably get Super Mario 3D Land, as it may have the highest possible re-playability and value.

I've already played Star Fox 64 to death in my childhood. No need for that one.

The Professor Layton series is a mystery puzzle game franchise. You solve puzzles to help characters in the game and advance in the story.

The game has very Studio Ghibli-esqe artwork. (movies like Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service) The music is very beautiful. I collect a few of the soundtracks, myself. Characters are fun and memorable, especially for thier looks. So wacky.

The puzzles range from arithmetic, chess, slide puzzles (like legend of zelda ice puzzle), logic games, etc. There's MANY types of puzzles. You DON'T have to do them all. Just as many as needed to proceed. You could skip all the ones you find hard and just do ones you like. For Miracle Mask, I found them too easy this time around.

In terms of all the games as a whole, there is a bit of continuity between them. The Layton timeline goes as such:

Professor Layton and the Last Specter
Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva (this is a movie)
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacies
Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box
Professor Layton and the Unwound Future

You can actually play all of them in any order because each individual game has a separate plot. The continuity is just character development. The layton games also have many animated cutscenes so you can watch important and beautiful scenes like an old 90s cartoon show.

As for which to play first, I would recommend The Last Specter as it includes a minigame called "London Life" which could provide additional entertainment. It's like a Earthbound/Animal Crossing subgame. Last Specter also is the first chronological game in the series as of now so if you follow the order from there you won't miss out on any inside jokes or whatever.

If you want to play them in the order as they were originally released, then you would want:

Professor Layton and the Curious Village (probably the best introductory besides Last Specter)
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box
Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
Professor Layton and the Last Specter
Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva (this is a movie)
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacies

I'd say it's between Super Mario and Super Mario. So get Super Mario.
